St Andrew's Church Bramfield is now open so that the nave is available to visit. Entrance is still through the chancel door and the interior is rather gloomy due to scaffolding outside. If you are particularly interested in the screen, bring a torch! You will be able to see from the picture that the church has an enormous thatched roof
The scene shows the thatching taking place in 1950 with the use of the traditional long thatching ladders.
We know from churchwardens' accounts from the 17th century onwards that almost every year a certain amount of patching with straw was undertaken.
Thatching has always been an expensive operation
1685 paid for straw for the church………….8s.00
paid to Tho Ellisfor thatching brooches & bindings 8s.00
1688paid for thatching the church 5s.00
paid for straw & the fetching 4s.06
1689 for straw & broches for the church 2s.00
1690 for straw & broches for the church 4s.00
1692 straw for the church and thatching £1.0.0
1693 for a load of straw and fetching 11s.00
to Tho Ellis for thatching , broches etc 10s.00
Since the South side has not been re-thatched since 1950 it is now our turn to keep the church and its treasures safe and dry so we have an ongoing appeal for the £67000 it is going to cost.
As we were fortunate to receive a sizeable legacy some years ago we are unlikely to be in receipt of any funding from English Heritage or Suffolk Historic Churches. Thankfully the Round Tower Churches Trust has given £2000 but after that we seem to be on our own.
AND the North side will not be far behind in needing re-thatching
